Why Digital Inaccessibility is everyone’s problem-and how to fix it

When we neglect digital accessibility, we exclude millions from fully participating in society.

its not just a problem for disabled people; it’s a challenege that impacts us all. Global Accessibly day serves as a powerful remainder that creating inclusive digital spaces isn’t just the responsibility of a few-it’s a collective effort that benefits everyone.” (Charity Digital 26th June 2024)

Doing Digital Inclusion: Disability handbook

The Social Model of Disability is the framework from which we look at the issues about accessing digital support. The model sates: “The social model of disability says that disability is caused by how society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for disabled people”.

Making Digital Affordable

Our recent support from #jobnetworkbristol ( has been a lifeline for one of our beneficiaries. Jimmy had a Stroke, which has left him mainly offline with only occasional trips to the library. But with the help of jobnetworkbristol our project took receipt of a tablet, set it up and presented to Jimmy. To help in the digital journey Jimmy is now an active user of the online course: Learn My Way https://www.learnmyway.com/ providing easy to follow examples covering a variety of online features and functions relating to emails, accessing socially essential services, security, social media, dealing with errors and making your PC/Laptop accessible whether for hearing , visual, physical or cognitive support. We can provide one-to-one mentoring alongside face to face support at our weekly drop in sessions.

Getting Connected

Geting people digitaly connected is critical at this current time where affordability and disability can preclude individuals from widening there horizons. With the help of our community partner North Tyneside Disability Forum we packed off a new Ipad for Simon. this will help him with his ongoing online studies and create a better virtual learning environment to accomplish his aims.

Mapping the rise in online learning – An introduction

Online learning is available to all. However, a focus by technology companies to create easy-to-read and navigable content is critical to ensure those with disabilities can particpate in making online learning truly inclusive. However, for many access is dependent on embracing digital processes, which is why we provide local support for vulnerable people living in North Tyneside with solutions to getting involved. We do this by breaking down the barriers that exclude them from taking advantage of all that the internet has to offer by delivering online support close to home and, thereby, increase the level of competency for developing their interests online and. critically, to give them the basic digital skills to tackle online learning.
